What is my Day Master?
The Day Master (日主) is the top character of your day pillar. It is the reference point the rest of the chart is read against — everything else is described in relation to it.
EXAMPLE —
Day pillar 庚辰 — so the Day Master is 庚, the top character.
The ten Day Masters
Your Day Master is always exactly one of these ten characters — five elements, each with a Yang and a Yin form. Which one is fixed by your day pillar; nothing else decides it.
| Stem | Element & polarity |
|---|---|
| 甲 | Yang Wood |
| 乙 | Yin Wood |
| 丙 | Yang Fire |
| 丁 | Yin Fire |
| 戊 | Yang Earth |
| 己 | Yin Earth |
| 庚 | Yang Metal |
| 辛 | Yin Metal |
| 壬 | Yang Water |
| 癸 | Yin Water |
Day Master vs. your Chinese zodiac animal
Your zodiac animal comes from the branch half of your birth-year pillar — one character out of your chart's eight, fixed by which BaZi year you were born in, not the calendar year. Your Day Master is a different character entirely: the stem of your birth-day pillar. The two come from independent cycles — one fixed by the year, the other by the day — so knowing your zodiac animal tells you nothing about your Day Master, and the reverse. Chinese zodiac 2027 covers the animal; this page covers the character a reading is actually built around.
Two reasons sites disagree about it
A birth between 23:00 and midnight sits in the zi hour, where schools split on whether the day pillar has already rolled over — that changes the Day Master itself. The late-zi convention states which side this engine takes, and the day-boundary cases record both results. Most sites near that boundary do not say which clock they read it on — clock time or true solar time — which is enough on its own to move the boundary.
Why the Day Master matters for the rest of the chart
Reading a chart means describing the other seven characters' relationship to the Day Master — which is why getting the day pillar wrong invalidates everything downstream, and why the free Day Master calculator prints the full correction chain it used rather than just the result. The ten-year luck pillars are read the same way, each pillar's stem by its relationship to the Day Master. To see a whole chart read this way, the public sample is a full natal report, read chapter by chapter. The hour pillar's stem comes from the day stem and the hour branch, as the hour stem table sets out — except for a birth between 23:00 and midnight, which takes the next day's stem.
Cast your chart — the result shows which side of the boundary you fall on and why. New to the chart itself? Start with what the four pillars are.
